WORD ON THE DOCK

Rain, Rain, GO AWAY!

Scattered rain clouds and thunderstorms have continued to emerge from the Gulf of Mexico and make their way northward into Calcasieu Lake all throughout this past week’s fishing trips. Although these storms can pose a challenge for our HR&G guides and customers, staying patient and persistent was the key to making some great days of fishing happen in between rain delays!
Even with weather conditions being subpar, our guides kept their heads down and eyes on the radar while out on the lake and staying on the bite. If a nasty storm rolled in, HR&G boats would retreat to the lodge for some cover and maybe a quick bite to eat, and then be sitting on go, waiting for a clear opening in the weather to get back out there and keep on chasing fishing.
Our guides found a steady speckled trout bite this past week, even with all the disturbances in the weather patterns. A nice amount of keeper sized trout have been hitting the dock ready to go under the knife, while redfish have mostly been in hiding. Although, we have had reports of some larger bull reds being landed, and then being released back into the lake (per the new redfish regulations) to fight another day.
The difference between plastic and live bait has been a little one-sided this week with most of our guides stating that they had much better luck with live bait rather than artificial. Shrimp has been the live bait of choice, especially rigged under a Rage popping cork by Midcoast Products. The depth of water you are fishing can also affect what length your leader under your popping cork needs to be, so don’t be afraid to try out different lengths until you find out what those fish want!
We have some boats available so call Tanya at (888) 762-3391 and come see what the Hackberry Rod &Gun Club is all about!

This Week’s Yummy Recipe

CRAB CLAW SENSATION

Recipe by

George Graham

Prep Time

15 min

Total Time

15 min

Serves

4 – 6

Ingredients

  • 1 pound cracked blue crab claws
  • 1 cup Hanley’s Sensation salad dressing
  • 1 teaspoon Acadiana Table Cajun Seasoning Blend, see recipe here
  • ½ cup diced green onion tops

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the crab claws and toss with the dressing. Sprinkle over the seasoning and toss again. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 3 hours or overnight.
  2. Before serving, drain the claws of excess dressing. Sprinkle with green onion tops and toss once more before serving.

Notes

I like leaving the tails on for this recipe but remove them if you prefer. As an appetizer, I serve three shrimp for each guest, but for a dinner entree, go with six. This dish would be perfect served over angel hair pasta with the bread served on the side.
